What's Up With CBS Taking Ratings Away?!

Posted on: March 30, 2008 4:50 am

About two or so weeks a go I was awarded my 1K. But, for the last four or five days I haven't posted but I have sent several private messages to a friend. I logged on to my lap top yesterday and low and behold...... my 1K has been literally ripped off. I say this because I didn't do anything to deserve losing it and I'll make my point about this now...

I was reading through the threads on the Auto boards and noticed that one oh my favorites Gixxer had created a thread about loosing his 1K. Now explain this... I have people on my connections that are 1k that have literally not been active for at least a month and a half and they still have their 1K. They have not posted, played any games and some of them are ranked even higher under their value than some of the people that are on here every day with the same rating! I have to believe in my case CBS has used this as some sort of punishment in their eyes for me putting them down here lately. What do I have to say about that? If the shoe fits wear it!!

I know there are better minds than mine out there so if anyone can come up with a solution to the way CBS treats members so different, please by all means ...let the Auto Boards know and any one else about the dictatorship of CBS.

What's Up With CBS Taking Ratings Away?!

You have made some good points and I don't know the math that is used for ratings.  However, as yah see the magical value for me is evidently 78. I had a top ten when I was not on for a couple of months and when I came back to some of the threads to say hello that are lotz like an instant message conversation with lotz of chatting but not much ratings I dropped to a 1k.  Now I have slowly gone up to a 10 over last month. I would say not rating posters with at least a 1 will cause them a fast drop from experience. I really believe that all fives is not necessary however most posters do get upset if not given a 5 which can work against the givers value if handed out to freely. This is just all my opinion so take it with a grain of salt.

I did not really expect to ever see a 10 again cause most of the posters with them post rarely when you check their profiles. I guess I became prolific enough with the help of friends. I know it is a real bummer when the ratings change for no apparent reason especially good guys like Gixxer. Since some of the ratings are based on number of posters I think the auto board suffers during an event like March Madness when there are so many posters.

I agree CBS is in charge however they pay for the space so it is their right to run it the way they want. I know cause of a disagreement I had over an avatar warning 11 months ago that last night was still there. If one doesn't like CBS ways their only choice is to walk with their fingers to another site.

In fairness, I do think the new rating system and the presence of admins on some threads to handle immediately "troll" problems and listening to complaints when a "valued" poster is warned by trolls and banned shows CBS is trying to do the "correct" thing. I mean they wouldn't pay off this money if they didn't want it to work?

What's Up With CBS Taking Ratings Away?!

G24 and Sue, CBS could clear up the issues with the ratings very quickly by letting everyone know what helps your value and what hurts it.  Every time I see one of these posts, it is filled with speculation about what is good and what is bad for your value, but no definitive rules.  Why can't CBS make it clear what they want from us?

I always say "give me your rules and I will play by them" but if they won't give us the rules, we are only guessing what will get us put in the penalty box, to use a hockey metaphor.

I know that giving out all 5's will hurt your rating because CBS sees it as giving out ratings in a haphazard manner.  They have said that much.  But does giving someone a 4 or less hurt their value?  One place I read that it will not, but based on some of the ratings drops I have seen for myself and others, I believe that it does

So CBS is telling us that you can't give out all 5's or you hurt yourself, but giving out less than a 5, will hurt the value of the person you want to reward.   Kind of a Catch 22, to use a literay metaphor.

So my new policy is to give out only 5's except to obvious trolls.  Not sure how that will affect my value, but it seems to fit what CBS wants us to do.

Oh and Sue, I see your Top 10 is currently back.  Congrats (at least for now).

What's Up With CBS Taking Ratings Away?!

I just give fives to all the posters on the board who contribute to the thread or the game, if anyone thinks this is haphard then so be it.

I am on the boards because I enjoy it and not because of the rating, I have met many good people and had a lot of fun. Given that I spend most of my day conversing in a foreign language these boards give me a welcome break.

G24, good luck with you rating and I have five starred you and added you, hope this helps.

What's Up With CBS Taking Ratings Away?!

Jimbo - I rate "haphazardly" (5's or nothing) and I've also tried other things (4's, 3's and not rating at all for a period of time), but as everyone else here, cannot figure it out. As G24 stated we have discussions on the autoboard and nobody really has an answer. As Sue said it seems the less you post the better it makes you. I really don't care as lonmg as I can make my own av. Don't get me wrong it's nice being in the upper part but it's not life or death to me. As you stated "Give me the rules to play be and I'll play by them".

The main reason I'm here is for fantasy Football. I just recently discovered the boards a little over a year ago after being here for several years. I spend most of my time on the autoboard since most of the rest of the threads are always having a pissing contest with less than civil conversations. The way admins seem to "monitor" the boards is questionable at best. But as people have pointed out it's their game and if you don't like it you know what you can do. Which is one of the reasons I haven't been here as much lately. I'm to old to play their games (LOL). I have added you and Big Tony to my favs (Sue & G24 were already on). Have a great day everyone...bluejay

What's Up With CBS Taking Ratings Away?!

I forgot to mention the 10 threads. I have nothing against thema and go to them now and then. I happen to be in the B & G last night but that's neither here nor there. Anyway CBS initially made it soiund like they wanted to get rid of them and actully warned people if they persisted in posting they would be banned. They will of course DENY this and I did not save the posts anywhere to prove mu point so it will be a "he said she said" thing and you know who will win that one. CBS says the more you get rated the higher you rating. When I mentioned the 10 threads I got now reply from an ADMIN (Imagine that!) but Cole or Blackbird respnded say there was nothign wrtong with them. Note Cole & Blackbird are NOT admins. So again another case of CBS talking out of both sides of there you know what. I guess I could say the "a' word on here but I don't want this post deleted. I may try it on another blog to test their theory. CBS says you can say almost anything you want on blogs, at least that's what I hear from either Cole or Blackbird. I'll have to go back and find that post. Have a great day (again)...bluejay

What's Up With CBS Taking Ratings Away?!

bluejay-Good points and I like you, as yah well know post whatever my rating or not a rating. I already had all of yah on my fav list and I for sure hand out fives to people on fav list. Only below fives I give out is to some who just are trying to rile up a thread. I am sure we all know what I mean.  If I want to post and I post and my rating goes down then so be it.

In defense of some of the tens threads there is a core on each that play fantasy ball together and actually chat about sports and life.

I don't think CBS is confining us to just sports anymore when CBS trivia of soaps is one of the games among other soap games.

I will have to give blogging more of a try. Especially since you can edit. I do go to some give 5's and adds if a person is on my favs and want to help them out.

Thanks Jimbo for me I don't see what the benefit of having more than the S is? They didn't deliver a fruit basket this am. Mine will go again quickly as probably was some sort of rating fluke with March Madness.

BlueTony yes the boards are just a "game" to me. I enjoy the friends I have made and the insight into sports and life I might have missed in my own viewing.

What's Up With CBS Taking Ratings Away?!

The process to generate ratings is very complex and trying to reduce it to a set of "rules" is counter-productive. Understand that your rating goes up or down, not just based on what you did recently, but what you did a while back and is no longer taken into account. Typically we only consider your last 90 days of actions as relevant.

In addition, Top 1000 is just the top 1000 users in the system. We have almost 300,000 users. So the difference between #1000 and #2000 is a lot smaller than one would think. You may have gone down not because of anything you did, but because of what someone else did to catch you. Things change quite a bit day to day (more than we would like, so we even have instituted some dampening effects to let users keep their Top X labels longer). We do realize that those that spend most of their time in the less trafficked boards of auto racing, hockey, golf, etc. are at somewhat of a disadvantage to those that want to talk football, basketball or baseball. We are exploring ways to make this fairer, but we don't have any solutions yet.

And to clear the ratings confusion for then 100th time... giving someone a rating of 1 can not hurt them. Yes, a 5 is better than a 1, but a 1 is better than no rating. And outside of warnings, there can't be any backslash against you (other than people just ignoring you). I know all this because I designed the system.

Thanks Tony Fernandez for the clarification and congratulations on the mathematical brain it took to design the system.

One other question: How long does a warning stay on your record now?

Tony, we appreciate some CBS input but I still think that receiving less than a 5, reduces your value.  I looked at some "trolls" who received multiple 1's and invariably their value seemed to drop.  Granted, they deserved the drop, but it really did seem related to the recent multiple 1's they received from others.

But hey, all I really care about is being able to set my own avatar.  Overall I think CBS does a great job of mainitaining a fun site and I appreciate the opportunity to participate in it.

What's Up With CBS Taking Ratings Away?!

My son sits over my shoulder and watches me sometimes on here and he is always telling me to give one's. But I always tell him that I should not give a one because that is not very nice. If you cannot say something positive then you should say anything at all. However, I do not want that to ruin my record. What am we supposed to do. Perhaps we should give the admin's ones then that way we will not upset anyone and still be able to not jeapardize our ratings by being too nice.

About What's Up With CBS Taking Ratings Away?!
I received my 1K rating about two or so weeks ago and I have not posted anything in about four or five days except for some personal messages to a friend. When I checked in yesterday I no longer had my 1K rating. I then read a thread on the auto boards where the same thing had happened to one of my favorites.. his 1K had been taken away. Now this may not seem like a big deal but, what is so frustrating is the fact that some of the people on my connections have had no activity on there profile,no posting,no games... nothing for almost two months and they still have their 1K! Can someone please offer an explanation for this? These same people would even have a higher value rating than some others who post on a regular basis. Has CBS decided to start to punish us for speaking our minds? That's the only explanation I can come up with. I'm sure there are brighter minds at work than mine on these boards, if you can find a solution to what's becoming an all too common problem.. please let us know. LOL! G24
